What a fascinating material!!! Historically, and recently, we have simply been captivated with this material and used it in many of our designs.
While Hematite is a fairly common mineral, it has a timeless charm. Most of the hematite that we use in our designs is deep silvery gray to black in color; however hematite can also have an appearance of rust, deep brown, or a deep reddish color similar to that of dried blood. For this reason, the Greeks’ originally believed that this mineral was the concentrated blood of the Gods, and that is where the stone got its name.
Hematite has a long history dating back as far as Babylon. Egyptians used it in the creation of many ornamental objects and believed it had calming properties. Native Americans used it to make war paint. However, Romans are generally credited as the first to use it in jewelry. Romans crafted talismans from hematite that were worn in battle and believed to provide protection. Today, many people still believe that hematite can promote inner peace, reduce stress, dissolve negativity, enhance memory, achieve balance, instill confidence, and promote dreams, hopes, aspirations and inner desires. It is often referred to as the “grounding” stone.
Eastern cultures believe that this particular mineral has many healing properties. It is said to improve the circulatory system, guard against kidney, blood, and nervous system disorders.
Hematite is often found near mineral springs in England, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and the Lake Superior region of North America. Interestingly, hematite deposits have been discovered on Mars which has lead scientists to believe that Mars at one time had water.
While hematite is a fairly hard mineral, it can be scratched and care should be taken when wearing it and it should be stored alone or in a velvet pouch if surrounded by other jewelry. Hematite does not require any solvents to clean and can be simply wiped down with a soft dry cloth to restore its beauty and luster.
Much of the hematite used in commercial jewelry is not real hematite but rather synthetically manufactured. One way to test the authenticity of hematite is by performing a “streak” test. To conduct this test, a hematite sample is scratched on an unfinished porcelain surface. If the “streak”, or powder left behind, appears red-brown in color, the sample is real hematite. Of course this test will damage the sample itself. Another test often used, while less accurate, is to expose the hematite sample to a magnet. Real hematite is not strongly attracted to a magnet where the synthetic variety often is.
Below is a sample test on one of the hematite beads used in our designs. Rather than show you the results on a standard streak plate, we used the rough surface on the bottom of a porcelain cup since this is a common household item that many people have. You can easily see the color of the residue left behind is indeed red-brown in color.
